16 September, Pembrey
Newport Harriers struck gold twice as the winter season got underway in the pleasant surroundings of Pembrey Country Park.
Our first gold came with the U13 Girls. Lily Williams put in a storming run on Leg 1 to give us a 16-second advantage. Ceri Griffiths, the youngest member of the team, kept us right in contention even if Blaenau Gwent now held a 1 second lead. Lily Hart maintained cool composure on Leg 3 to open up a decisive 52-second gap. Alyssa Baker comfortably held the lead to complete a fantastic team effort.
Our other gold medallists were the U17 Men. Spencer Smith wisely avoided the mad sprint at the start, then picked off athletes to hand over in 2nd, 6 seconds behind Carmarthen. Jackson Mountford turned the tables on Leg 2 as he surged ahead to establish a 25-second lead. With Remi Adebiyi on anchor leg there was nothing much that could go wrong, though he did try when he took a wrong turn, but eventually crossed the finish line 13 seconds ahead of rivals Carmarthen.
Our U17 Girls – Catrin Phillips, Bethan Wainwright, Ellie Robinson – took silver as they progressed from 4th to 3rd to 2nd, with Ellie on anchor leg clawing back a 24-second deficit in brutal fashion.
Our Masters Men 35+ took bronze. Richard Jones produced the 2nd fastest leg of the race, while Gareth Knight and Kevin Seville kept their form over the 5k course to hold off the fast finishing Carmarthen Harriers.
U13 Boys (Leo Stark, Oliver Humphreys, Isaac Jones, Finlay Davies) missed bronze by one place in 4th. U15 Girls (Ashleigh Steer, Lowri Thomas, Elin Griffiths) were 6th. U15 Boys (Oscar Denton, Josh Jones, Dan Meehan) were 8th. Our two B teams, U17 Women (Caitlin Jones, Anna Brown, Shireen Balouch) and U17 Men (Jake Seville, David Locke, Luke Gawthorn), both finished 6th in their races.
Our youngest competitor on the day, Anya Brady, finished 6th in the U11 race.
