Welsh Indoor Championships

Saturday 27th January 2018

On a weekend of high quality sporting action Newport Harriers were producing some quality results in the Welsh Indoor Championships in the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff.

Centre stage at the start of the meeting under 17 Amy Jenkins was producing a top performance to win her first ever Welsh high jump title with a faultless performance up to 1m 55cm. She narrowly missed a new personal best of 1m 60cm in a dominant performance.

Meanwhile hidden away in a corner of the arena Gwennan Lewis produced a personal best of 10m 60cm to win the under 20 women’s shot and training partner Dylan Bevan was equally dominant in wining the Welsh title in the under 17 men’s shot put event.

On the track Owen Locke broke 2 minutes to win the under 20 men’s title in 1m 59.03 seconds; sprinter Zoe Nash produced a personal best of 7.74 seconds to take silver in the senior women’s 60 metres; Jake Seville won Bronze in the under 17 men’s 800 metres in 2m 08.28 seconds having earlier run a personal best of 2m 06.14seconds in qualifying; Elin Griffiths took a bronze medal in the under 15 girls 1500 metres in 5m 13.30 seconds and Kyle Arnold came in in third place in the 60 metre hurdles after colliding heavily with a couple of hurdles in a time of 8.81 seconds.

Daniel Cork was slightly disappointed with his performance in the shot. Tight hamstrings and an injury picked up whilst warming up restricted him to 13m 42 cm, still good enough for 3rd place, but he is capable of winning at this level.

Some Harriers narrowly missed out on medals but there were personal best throughout the day demonstrating that the club has some stars in the making. Remi Adebiyi was 4th in the senior men’s 1500 metres and the first under 20 to cross the line in a time of 4m 04.23s.and Luke Gawthorn set a personal best of 2m 04.21s in taking 4th place in the under 20 men’s race.
