Welsh Debuts in the Cross Challenge Cross Country

Up and coming Newport Harriers endurance runners Spencer Smith (15) and Abed Teweldebrhan (22) represented Wales for the first time in the British Athletics Cross Challenge Cross Country tournament held in Antrim, Northern Ireland on Saturday.

Despite being one of the youngest in his age group Smith, from Caerleon, was first Welshman home in sixth place in the under 17 age group race. Teweldebrhan, originally from Eritrea but living in Newport and a member of Newport Harriers, finished 20th in the senior men’s race.

The Cross Challenge tournament involves five key races across the autumn and winter to find Britain’s top endurance runners but the Antrim event included an international Celtic team competition between Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Wales finished second in the under 17 event and 3 third in the senior men’s race. Smith and Teweldebrhan have been rewarded for consistent performances in local Gwent leagues cross country races and earlier cross challenge events.

They will now focus their training for the Welsh Cross Country Championships in Swansea on 22 February and the final Cross Challenge event in Loughborough on March 10.

Well Done both :)
