Pilot Held At Niac

Updated: Mar 15, 2018

Saturday 24th February

A pilot East Wales Junior Development day for throws and jumps was held at NIAC on Saturday. Scores of children, their parents and their coaches attended searching for knowledge to take them forward in the shot, discus, long jump and high jump. The session was led by Welsh International Athletes including Ryan Spencer-Jones (East Wales Development Officer), Adel Nicholl, Owen Cheshire and coaches with experience of delivering at all levels of the sport.

There was a good representation from Newport athletes who benefitted from the knowledge and experience of international stars.

The session was made possible by Grassroots funding from Welsh Athletics which is taken from the athletes registration fees. There are opportunities for clubs and regions to use this money to develop areas of the sport where they feel the athletes can benefit. Priority is given to new projects and clubs that have successfully bid and delivered in the past will be looked on favourably.

There will be a follow up session in the summer. Ryan is looking for feedback from all those present at the event.
