Newport Midland fixture Saturday 7th July
Absolutely amazing!! A totally overwhelming day. Our first home fixture in the league for many years and the athletes didn’t disappoint…..provisional finish is 3rd out of 7. Our highest place this year and currently puts us 5th, just outside of the relegation area. We all know we can do this!! We just need to turn up to the next match on Sunday 5th August…….
I always have a soft spot for the relays as I feel this is when us Newport Harriers show our true support for each other and they didn’t disappoint. The women’s 4 x 100m included Meg Selway, Zoe Nash, Alison Singleton and Jaz Barraclough who together made sure they stormed home in 1st ! (SB) The men’s 4 x 100m relay consisted of Kyle Arnold, Josh Ford, Isaac Price and Sam Rutherford, together they ran a fantastic relay to gain 2nd. The 4 x 400m relays were as ever the final events of the day. Lisa Scarfi, Victoria Belcher, Caitlin Jones and Chloe Powell did a fantastic effort after competing in 12 previous events between them prior to the relay and the men showed what team spirit is all about as Lee Richards pulled up on the last 100m only to be cheered on by everyone else to complete the leg before handing over to John Morgan, Josh Davies and finally Tyrone Fowler.
There were 10 new athletes to the Midland League. Matt Edmonds, Seren Jones, Thomas Rees, Zoe Nash and Josh Davies all stepped up to support us and there were also guest competitors of Isaac Price, Randy Bonsu, Josh Ford and Jim Morgan. Unfortunately, Michael Owen didn’t finish his 800m but it was good to see him there.
I often miss watching the next athletes as they are all so spaced out but without them we couldn’t achieve what we do…..our FIELD athletes – Han O’Connor, Jason Leach, Ian Williams, Mark Boswell, Martin Davies and Keith Powell. A special thanks to Martin and Keith for coaching Kirsty Crane in the pole vault, her first attempt and she came 3rd! And finally, Abed Teweldebrhan was 1st in both 5000m (SB) and 1500m A race, Anna Brown was 2nd in both 800m (SB) and 400m (PB) and Spencer Smith was 1st in 1500m B race (SB).
A special mention to Keith Powell who broke the club record in the Masters Triple Jump with 9.61m.
And finally, we couldn’t do what we do with out all the support crew of officials and on this occasion Malcolm and Sonia with the refreshments. Thank you all.
Athletes of the match – Lee Richards, his determination to not let the team down brought everyone to their feet and shows what support we have for each other!
Zoe Nash, debut performance for Zoe and she was 1st in both the 100m and 200m “a” races along with a fantastic 2nd leg of the 4 x 100m relay!
