Gwent League Summary

Gwent League Summary (after 2 fixtures, 3 remaining)

Congratulations to Ellie Robinson for her victory in the U17 Women’s race on Saturday in Brecon. This makes her Newport’s first female winner since Angharad Bishop on 2nd November 2003 (footnote: Emily Diamond [Bristol] was 12th in this race). This puts Ellie 2nd overall.

Abed Teweldebrhan was 7th in the Senior Men’s race. He is joint 2nd overall, and joint leader of the U23 competition. Top Senior Women’s position so far comes from Victoria Belcher, who was 147th in Cardiff.

Spencer Smith and Jackson Mountford have a keen rivalry in the U17 Men’s age group. Spencer was 3rd ahead of Jackson in race 1 at Cardiff, while Jackson was 3rd in Brecon ahead of Spencer. Spencer lies 2 points ahead of Jackson overall, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Flying high in U13 Girls is Lily Williams, improving from 6th to 4th, and lying 4th overall. With two top 10 places, Amy Garrod lies 7th in U11 Girls. In U11 Boys Harry Dawes was 5th on the day and is now 3rd overall, Harry Bradley is 8th overall after gaining his first top 10 finish at Brecon. Highest position for U13 Boys so far is Harry Russell who was 25th in Brecon. Michael Owen is on the leader board in 9th position in U15 Boys, while Elin Griffiths came 18th in Brecon in her first year in U15 Girls.

Our top teams aiming for the podium are U17 Men in 2nd place, and U17 Women in 3rd place.

Our flagship senior teams are currently achieving mid-table consolidation. Newport men are 7th in Division 2, and Newport women are 13th in Division 3. The good news for the women is that there are 10 teams below them and there is no Division 4.

The second Gwent League fixture also incorporated East Wales Championships. Results are elsewhere but our individual gold medal winners were Abed Teweldebrhan (Senior Men), Jackson Mountford (17M), Owen Locke (U20M), Lily Williams (U13G), and Ellie Robinson (U17W).
