Gwent Cross Country League

Match 4 - 11th February, Pontypool

Newport Harriers had its most successful day in recent memory in last weekend’s Gwent League, recording one victory, three 2nd places, and two 3rd places, and going top in overall in the individual Senior Men’s competition.

Ellie Robinson won the U17 Women’s race with fierce determination over the tough course. You knew she meant business when she discarded her gloves on Lap 2 to go bare-knuckle for the final drive to the winning line. Ellie lies overall equal-2nd with one race to go. Backed up by Anna Brown, Shireen Balouch, Caitlin Jones and Seren Jones, the U17 team lies 3rd.

Abed Teweldebrhan was 9th on the day but moves to 1st overall in the Senior Men’s race. He was also 3rd in the U23 race and tops this table overall. Kevin Seville is our other athlete on the Senior Men’s table, in 87th place.

Our three 2nd place athletes were Amy Garrod, outstanding in the U11 race; Lily Williams (U13 Girls), who looked stronger the longer the race went on; and Remi Adebiyi (U17 Men), who has finally learnt how to run cross-country properly.

The U17 Men have three athletes on the leader board – Remi (4th), Jackson Mountford (5th), Spencer Smith (7th) and Jake Seville (9th) – and the team lies 2nd. Owen Locke is another who has finally learnt to love cross-country, coming 3rd in U20 Men, and lying 3rd overall.

Michael Owen (U15 Boys) was 9th on the day and lies 5th overall, while Elin Griffiths (U15 Girls) was 8th, and lies 10th overall. Highest U11 Boys finish came from Theo Phillips in 43rd place, while in U13 Boys it was Isaac Jones in 40th place.

Our top Senior Women was Ann Saxena, 121st on the day and 102nd overall. This converted to 7th in the Masters 55 race, and 7th overall Madeline Baker ran the senior race and this converted into 11th in the U23s.

Top male vets on the leader board are Kevin Seville (47th, M35), Jonathan Samuel (39th, M45), and Darryn McAtee (15th, M55).

Our Senior Men’s team lie 8th in Division 2, no danger of either promotion or relegation. Our Senior Women are 12th in Division 3, and trying to persuade Ellie Robinson to forge her date of birth so she may run in the Senior race next time out.

Well done to all the Under 11s taking part in the Gwent League today. Special mention for Amy Garrod who put in an impressive run finishing in 2nd position.

Thanks to Darryn Mcatee for the report :)
